Mid-August Heat in Maddock

Now that many of the cow pokes have moved on, the town settles down again in hopes of preparing for a good fall harvest and the impending winter which seems closer then expected. Still, even with the lower population, settling down is something that Maddock has been far from since the Fourth of July Celebration.

Speculation began to rise quickly just days after the event when Damien D'aray and Letitia Taylor disappeared for a few days, it later came to light that another attack had befallen the woman, possibly by the same indivuduals who attacked her months before during her crusade to stop the saloon. Meanwhile, the older miner nicknamed 'Toots' ended up dead while in the jail cell he had been inhabitiing since the mob delivered him to Sheriff Jack Barron. Although never officially reported on, the rumor is that the man's death was in fact by poison.

The subsequent warning (read order) to women to not travel alone within the town created quite a stir with the Ladies Auxillary Circle who did not care at all to be told what they could and couldn't do, even by the attractive Sheriff Barron. Still, they stayed within anxiously discussing the intrigue afoot. Their first chance to really get out and socialize came just a few days later when Doctor Kei held a galla event at his new property along the river. It was well attended and a good time had by all. Course, some had ulterior motives for attending, anxious to see what sort of layout the good Doctor had that ensured the propriety of several woman who were living under his roof at the time.

The pleasantries of that evening quickly fell of the topic list when a few cow hands attempted to burn down the same said house, alighting a straw filled dummy in the courtyard with the words 'Choo Go Hum'. Luckly for all involved, the bungling men didn't count on the Sheriff being on premise at the time and they were quickly thwarted. Still, the message seemed to have affected Doctor Kei enough to find alternative accomodations for Miss Moreau and Mrs. Lockhart.

It was a night of celebration when Mr. D'aray announced in mid-July that he had proposed to Miss Taylor and she had accepted. Drinks in the Golden Pheonix were on the house that night, and many came by to wish the pair good wishes. Secretly, however this launched a serious of snide if likely jealous conversations among some of the older ladies within the town who felt that Miss Taylor was really settling below her class with Mr. D'aray. After all, while very charming the man is first and foremost a gambler and a saloon owner. Speculation continues on just where the couple might live once they marry.

Likely not in the boarding house, though it is now under new management as Miss Caroline was needed by her family and left her neice Miss Mariah Johnson in charge. Many fond of Miss Caroline were quick to send over welcoming baskets to the young woman who had her work cut out for her given the number of residents staying within.

The Town Meeting to discuss the proposed water supply system turned into a heated debate as the contracted Water Engineer was left to man the meeting alone, no sign of the Mayor to be seen. Many townsfolks wanted to know the implication of the costs, the plans for refuse management as well as the alternatives. By the end of the meeting, many walked away with more questions then answers and it was decided that prior to any construction, another meeting would be needed.

The most recent news, the shooting of Theirry Marcel by parties unknown near the trading post, not to mention the kidnapping of his nephew Theo. After weeks of being missing with many in the town, including Sheriff Barron trying to determine just where Theo might be, a lead finally comes. A man was seen talking to the blacksmith about a shackle and chain and then just a few days later several shots resounding through the night sky from the woods near the Mining Camp.

- No, Maddock isn't settling down by far.
