Foolish Notions

"You know that lady nurse - the widow who was helping Doc Webster after the fire? I saw her at the church picnic with that Chinaman. They seemed awfully friendly." The old woman's tone is disapproving, and her voice goes up a notch as she continues, "And then he introduced her as his apprentice, of all things... said he's teaching her to be a /doctor/. Have you ever heard anything so ridiculous?"

The woman's LAC compatriot shakes her head and scoffs, "A lady doctor, indeed! Look at what fool notions that fellow is putting into people's heads. As if having a Chinaman who thinks he's a doctor wasn't bad enough..."

A few medical schools began accepting women beginning in the 1850's, but even in 1877 women doctors were very uncommon in the East, and even moreso in the West.
