Bathhouse/Garbeau
Ann, or Annie, Garbeau arrived in Maddock first, and she was followed later by her husband, Andrew. Annie has since her arrival, set up Maddock’s bathhouse, and she is often found there, helping customers. Andrew, however, often takes himself off for extended lengths of time, to engage in some unknown business elsewhere, and then he returns. The Garbeaus strive not to attract too much attention to themselves, and are fairly-well considered, in town.
Boarding House/Rosen
Mariah Rosen, once Johnson, came to Maddock to help her Aunt Caroline run the boarding house. She now has exclusive management of it, and after advertising for a husband, she disappeared to Great Falls with a man who had arrived in town several years before with his own young son –
St. John Rosen. If there was a courtship, few know of it, and now the two are settled in their own place, with a new child, Victoria Grace, while Mariah still runs the Boarding House with a firm hand and strict rules.
Ylsa’s Restaurant/Juerta, Mendez
Ylsa Mendez began the influx of Mexicans into town, when she arrived with a horse-stealing Irishman who was later hung. Left penniless, Ylsa took a job at Wilona Jenkin’s Grey Horse Saloon, tending bar. Her brother,
Miguel Mendez, soon arrived and that trickster ended up defying about every social more there was, paying for it in a legion of scars and wounds, along the way. He, after a fascinating relationship with the then-deputy Jack Transom, as well as
Tess Elliot, finally settled down with Tess, into marriage. His son
Marcos arrived, courtesy of the woman who had birthed him, unbeknownst to Miguel, and he and Tess’ mulatto son, Kevin, and their own child, Isabel, have integrated into an odd, but fairly happy family. Ylsa, after several flings with notables such as Richard Allard and Christopher Quintan, finally settled down for one of Miguel’s old military cronies, Capitan Ignacio Juerta, or
‘Naco’. They have one son, Angel.
Double M/McMasters
Evangeline McMasters, widow of Shane McMasters, is both the mother of two young sons (Shane Marcos and Paul), as well as the manager of the Double M. The ranch has succeeded under her hand, and her work lets her rarely have time for trips into town. Joe
Roland, one of her hands at the Double M, hails from Kentucky, and often spends his pay at the Phoenix Saloon, socializing with the locals.
The ranch manager and foreman is Cleve Ramsey.
Twin Hills Outfit/Quintan
The Late Karl Quintan, king of the bad, ran Maddock in his time. Though he was widely despised, he was even
more so feared, and Karl Quintan reigned without objection until Marshal Tucker settled into town and gave it the backbone it needed in order to stand up against the Quintan. Karl died a mysterious death, a few years back, which has been unlamented and unsolved, but the name, Quintan, still raises hackles and suspicions. Karl’s oldest son,
Christopher, has about as shadowy as past as his father had dealings. Some like the man, some hate him, but he has – maybe
more so than any other Quintan except his sister – tried to get involved in the town in both leadership and support functions. Though he has long and unexplained absences, some folks grant that this apple /might/ have fallen some distance from the tree. The youngest son of Karl Quintan,
Lindley only seems to show up when trouble is brewing. He is, however, largely inept and seems to be provided by God as a comic relief.
Madeline Randolph, Karl’s daughter,
apparently carries the curse of the family; she is twice widowed and is alone running Twin Hills and raising a gimp son – Joshua – who is also the sole heir to the Quintan fortune. Hank Mathison is Twin Hill’s foreman, and Conseula, the house help.
The Brandt Ranch/Brandt/Culver
Samantha Brandt – Once Samantha Bargold, Samantha came west to visit her cousin, the then-deputy Jack Transom, and ended up falling for Reverend
Gregory Brandt of the Reformed Church of Maddock. Settling here, Samantha Brandt raises fine blooded horses and a passel of kids on the Brandt Ranch, while her husband works at establishing a college in the vicinity. The Brandt Ranch foreman and manager,
Benjamin Culver is a longtime resident of Maddock, once from Kentucky, and he and his half-breed Canadian wife, Elizabeth are busy raising their six children. Caleb Bryant, Sean Duffy, and
Herod Mercer are Brandt
ranch hands of note.
Barrett/Bryant
Andrea and Caleb Bryant – she, a gunsmith whose shop carries her maiden name, Barrett, is a tinkerer and thinker, often with a sharp tongue but a real eye for detail and creativity. He, a soft-touch with horses, seems to have the ‘knack’ for gentle breaking and trouble-shooting of equine problems.
This must have served him well, in his courtship of the rather independent Andrea. While Caleb now splits his time between the Brandt ranch and his own homestead, Andrea remains mostly in town at her
gun shop, where her husband visits regularly.
Montgomery/Zamir
Doctor Ishmael ‘Mo’ Montgomery – Kei Zungji arrived as a doctor to a town that desperately needed one. He has remained here and since established an alternative-medicine clinic which employs a number of the locals, as well as his ‘cousin’, JingLu Zamir. The Chinese have suffered both abuse and adoration from the town – mostly abuse – and have had more than a few run-ins with nameless entities that harass them for heritage and social dealings. After Kei announced his engagement to a white woman,
Scarlett Fairchilde, he was disowned by his family and he has chosen to be called by his new name, Montgomery. Scarlett Montgomery, once Fairchilde, was only briefly in Maddock before being wooed into the arms of her Chinese husband; few know of her background. Elisabet
JingLu Zamir is much more recently arrived from southern China where she apprenticed with her brother, as an
apothecarist, for nearly 15 years. She seems to have come to Montana to assist her ‘cousin’ Doctor Mo, at his clinic. There, she offers both Western and Eastern herbal remedies, and is engaged in training the deaf youth,
Kennet Anderson, as an apprentice. JingLu recently married the town’s Cambridge-trained Master engineer Zamir, and they live in a homestead south of town.
Jenkins/Tucker
Wilona Jenkins – Once madam of the Grey Horse Saloon, Wilona Jenkins has served as a catalyst for several of the towns more uproarious scenes. Pursued by both Karl Quintan and William
Tucker, as well as running a profitable business, Wilona had her fingers in politics and money both. The appearance of a man who called himself her husband threw something of a wrench into Wilona’s lifestyle. Her son,
Travis, still lingers in Maddock, though he is the quiet sort that by and large avoids the public limelight.
Marcel/Grey
Thierry Marcel arrived in town as a drifter, and tends to drift in and out of town as fits his moods. Soon after, his ‘nephew’, the actor Theo Grey, appeared. The two took to living together, picking up odd jobs until their purchase of the town’s defunct newspaper, the Maddock Guardian. Now, for whatever reason, Thierry Marcel is in San Francisco, and
Theo Grey runs and edits the new Maddock Maverick newspaper. From time to time, Thierry’s daughter, ‘Dora’ makes an appearance – usually only for social functions. She was engaged to Hank Mathison of Twin Hills, but a wedding never quite occurred.
Saloon Girls
Miss Gem – The premiere town madam, Miss Gem owns and runs the Phoenix Dance Hall, and manages the Saloon’s ‘girls’ for hire. Miss Gem is a legend in her own time, a vision of grace and loveliness and known to have a big heart as well as considerable proportions elsewhere as well. Notable
among the saloon’s fancy ladies are Caitlyn, an Irish-accented vision of fire and lace;
Desiree, a Cajun beauty of legendary skill; and Rose, the Dusky Rose of Araby.
