Town Authorities
Mayor William Tucker
About to step down from that position in the upcoming mayoral elections, William Tucker has had a long history with Maddock. William Tucker was the first Federal Marshal to be assigned Maddock as part of his district in 1868. During his time in Maddock he hung the corrupt sheriff Conner and proceeded to bring his own form of order to what was a rough mining and ranching town. His reputation was mixed among the townsfolk as he had a reputation for drinking violence and a long standing love affair with a local madam, Wilona Jenkins. His hatred for Karl Quintan and his ability to protect those he served garnered him many friends. He served in the town for almost three years before disappearing. However, the fire of the town seemed to have called William Tucker back, and he was elected mayor.  Who knows, now, what he’ll turn his attentions to.

Judge J. Terrance Framingham
The Honorable Judge Framingham has served as the Federal Territory Judge for years now, and Maddock has been included on his circuit.  He both hears cases as well as attends the various social functions of the town, when his schedule allows.  His wife, the Mrs. Framingham, is currently back in Boston.

Sheriff Jack Barron
An ex-Texas Ranger, who found Maddock on his return trip from an errand in the north part of the territory, Barron ended up mired in the town for the duration of the winter.  Being the restless sort, he almost immediately acquired the position of Sheriff, and he’s ended up staying on in that capacity.  He brings with him a reputation for ‘always getting his man’, and a shrewd, if not creative ways of ensuring that the town remains basically peaceful.  Briefly married, Sheriff Barron now lives alone, but he calls many among the townspeople, his friends.  His popularity, or perhaps his effectiveness as a lawman, recently earned him a nomination for mayor from some of the less law-abiding citizens of the town.

Town Names
Kinlow
Amelia Kinlow, one of the undertaker’s eldest daughters, has both a hand in the family business and an order to find a husband, so her son-less father can have someone to teach the undertaking trade. A bright and clever girl, one does wonder who she’ll come back with.

O'Dwyer
Sean O'Dwyer is a man who walked in soon after the fire, from over in the Wyoming territory. He came to Maddock in order to raise sheep, and has basically kept to himself otherwise. He's might have been a soldier, from the Union Army kepi he wears and the disfigurement on the left side.

Montgomery
A writer from New York, Elise lives in the boarding house and is rumored to be an heiress; she does not need to take a job to support herself, and she will spend extended periods of time locked within her room. Elise left New York to travel, gaining ideas for stories and characters wherever she goes. Maddock now seems to be serving as the writer's inspiration, and it is unclear just how long the woman intends to stay.

Dalton
The new town doctor, Jimmy hails from Virginia, where he was trained as a physician, but he decided after his medical schooling to take his skills to the wilds of the west. He is a dedicated scientist, calm of temper and conservative in behavior. His practice is currently located in a rented room at Annie’s Bathhouse, in North Maddock.

Coventry
After a wide-ranging international career, Fenton Edward Coventry III, has arrived in Maddock with considerable fortune, considerable ideas and considerable interest in the local economics of the place. He has, since his establishment here, gained and lost a fiance, involved himself in erecting a firehouse and organizing a fire brigade, and purchasing the Gentleman’s Club, as well as building an expansive mansion of his own, outside of town. Fenton is assisted by his bodyguard, the Japanese man Shiro.

D’aray
Coming to Maddock in the guise of a gambler, Damien set roots in the town when he won a local saloon in a card game. Since then, he has settled, branched out into other businesses, including a brewery and gristmill. Damien has consistently shown an interest in the betterment of the town, having ridden in posses, helped protect town citizenry, and spearheaded economic development of the town. He was defeated for mayor in 1877, but will run again this year.

Porter
Having tired of lumber and fish in a tiny little town in Oregon, Rick Porter was on his way back east when heard that Maddock that probably needed a man of his barbering skills, since about half the town had just burned down. He quickly settled into life in Maddock, and made an unsuccessful bid for Mayor in the fall of 1877.

Tucker
A local, who turned ‘shotgun’, then stage driver, Sean Tucker has decided that Maddock suits him more than any of the other towns on his route, and he hopes to purchase the Stage Depot, in order to make this his home. Until then, the man comes and goes as per his job schedule, and is living at the Maddock Maverick offices, apparently doing part-time work for the newspaper as well.

Lockhart
From Maryland, the Lockharts came to Maddock just before the great fire of 1877 and it was in that fire that Michael Lockhart died. Caitlin, trained as a nurse, stayed on in that very needed capacity. Eventually she met and was apprenticed to Doctor Mo, eventually living there at the clinic, until she left recently to go to San Francisco, where she was accepted to medical school. Caitlin’s brother “Duffy” resides in Maddock as well; both siblings are well-respected community members. Before she left, Caitlin became engaged to Herod Mercer, a Brandt ranch hand.

Ellis
Tyler 'Ty' Ellis is a homesteader from Pennsylvania who arrive in Maddock in late '71. Since then he's been working hard on his farm south of town which has prospered quite nicely as a result. His cherry orchard is a popular picnic spot for young couples who are sparking. In '73 he took advantage of the recently passed Timber Culture Act to file for a second grant of 160 acres on which he is now growing apple, cherry, pear, and plum orchards.

Delaware
Jason Delaware is employed by the San Diego Trust Company the holding bank which oversees the Bank of Maddock. He arrived in Maddock four weeks after the fire to take over the bank which had been closed since the fire, and has been a rather disliked figure in town, since then.

Groups
Bathhouse/Garbeau
Ann, or Annie, Garbeau arrived in Maddock first, and she was followed later by her husband, Andrew. Annie has since her arrival, set up Maddock’s bathhouse, and she is often found there, helping customers. Andrew, however, often takes himself off for extended lengths of time, to engage in some unknown business elsewhere, and then he returns. The Garbeaus strive not to attract too much attention to themselves, and are fairly-well considered, in town.

Boarding House/Rosen
Mariah Rosen, once Johnson, came to Maddock to help her Aunt Caroline run the boarding house. She now has exclusive management of it, and after advertising for a husband, she disappeared to Great Falls with a man who had arrived in town several years before with his own young son – St. John Rosen. If there was a courtship, few know of it, and now the two are settled in their own place, with a new child, Victoria Grace, while Mariah still runs the Boarding House with a firm hand and strict rules.

Ylsa’s Restaurant/Juerta, Mendez
Ylsa Mendez began the influx of Mexicans into town, when she arrived with a horse-stealing Irishman who was later hung. Left penniless, Ylsa took a job at Wilona Jenkin’s Grey Horse Saloon, tending bar. Her brother, Miguel Mendez, soon arrived and that trickster ended up defying about every social more there was, paying for it in a legion of scars and wounds, along the way. He, after a fascinating relationship with the then-deputy Jack Transom, as well as Tess Elliot, finally settled down with Tess, into marriage. His son Marcos arrived, courtesy of the woman who had birthed him, unbeknownst to Miguel, and he and Tess’ mulatto son, Kevin, and their own child, Isabel, have integrated into an odd, but fairly happy family. Ylsa, after several flings with notables such as Richard Allard and Christopher Quintan, finally settled down for one of Miguel’s old military cronies, Capitan Ignacio Juerta, or ‘Naco’. They have one son, Angel.

Double M/McMasters
Evangeline McMasters, widow of Shane McMasters, is both the mother of two young sons (Shane Marcos and Paul), as well as the manager of the Double M. The ranch has succeeded under her hand, and her work lets her rarely have time for trips into town. Joe Roland, one of her hands at the Double M, hails from Kentucky, and often spends his pay at the Phoenix Saloon, socializing with the locals. The ranch manager and foreman is Cleve Ramsey.

Twin Hills Outfit/Quintan
The Late Karl Quintan, king of the bad, ran Maddock in his time. Though he was widely despised, he was even more so feared, and Karl Quintan reigned without objection until Marshal Tucker settled into town and gave it the backbone it needed in order to stand up against the Quintan. Karl died a mysterious death, a few years back, which has been unlamented and unsolved, but the name, Quintan, still raises hackles and suspicions. Karl’s oldest son, Christopher, has about as shadowy as past as his father had dealings. Some like the man, some hate him, but he has – maybe more so than any other Quintan except his sister – tried to get involved in the town in both leadership and support functions. Though he has long and unexplained absences, some folks grant that this apple /might/ have fallen some distance from the tree. The youngest son of Karl Quintan, Lindley only seems to show up when trouble is brewing. He is, however, largely inept and seems to be provided by God as a comic relief. Madeline Randolph, Karl’s daughter, apparently carries the curse of the family; she is twice widowed and is alone running Twin Hills and raising a gimp son – Joshua – who is also the sole heir to the Quintan fortune. Hank Mathison is Twin Hill’s foreman, and Conseula, the house help.

The Brandt Ranch/Brandt/Culver
Samantha Brandt – Once Samantha Bargold, Samantha came west to visit her cousin, the then-deputy Jack Transom, and ended up falling for Reverend Gregory Brandt of the Reformed Church of Maddock. Settling here, Samantha Brandt raises fine blooded horses and a passel of kids on the Brandt Ranch, while her husband works at establishing a college in the vicinity. The Brandt Ranch foreman and manager, Benjamin Culver is a longtime resident of Maddock, once from Kentucky, and he and his half-breed Canadian wife, Elizabeth are busy raising their six children. Caleb Bryant, Sean Duffy, and Herod Mercer are Brandt ranch hands of note.

Barrett/Bryant
Andrea and Caleb Bryant – she, a gunsmith whose shop carries her maiden name, Barrett, is a tinkerer and thinker, often with a sharp tongue but a real eye for detail and creativity. He, a soft-touch with horses, seems to have the ‘knack’ for gentle breaking and trouble-shooting of equine problems. This must have served him well, in his courtship of the rather independent Andrea. While Caleb now splits his time between the Brandt ranch and his own homestead, Andrea remains mostly in town at her gun shop, where her husband visits regularly.

Montgomery/Zamir
Doctor Ishmael ‘Mo’ Montgomery – Kei Zungji arrived as a doctor to a town that desperately needed one. He has remained here and since established an alternative-medicine clinic which employs a number of the locals, as well as his ‘cousin’, JingLu Zamir. The Chinese have suffered both abuse and adoration from the town – mostly abuse – and have had more than a few run-ins with nameless entities that harass them for heritage and social dealings. After Kei announced his engagement to a white woman, Scarlett Fairchilde, he was disowned by his family and he has chosen to be called by his new name, Montgomery. Scarlett Montgomery, once Fairchilde, was only briefly in Maddock before being wooed into the arms of her Chinese husband; few know of her background. Elisabet JingLu Zamir is much more recently arrived from southern China where she apprenticed with her brother, as an apothecarist, for nearly 15 years. She seems to have come to Montana to assist her ‘cousin’ Doctor Mo, at his clinic. There, she offers both Western and Eastern herbal remedies, and is engaged in training the deaf youth, Kennet Anderson, as an apprentice. JingLu recently married the town’s Cambridge-trained Master engineer Zamir, and they live in a homestead south of town.

Jenkins/Tucker
Wilona Jenkins – Once madam of the Grey Horse Saloon, Wilona Jenkins has served as a catalyst for several of the towns more uproarious scenes. Pursued by both Karl Quintan and William Tucker, as well as running a profitable business, Wilona had her fingers in politics and money both. The appearance of a man who called himself her husband threw something of a wrench into Wilona’s lifestyle. Her son, Travis, still lingers in Maddock, though he is the quiet sort that by and large avoids the public limelight.

Marcel/Grey
Thierry Marcel arrived in town as a drifter, and tends to drift in and out of town as fits his moods. Soon after, his ‘nephew’, the actor Theo Grey, appeared. The two took to living together, picking up odd jobs until their purchase of the town’s defunct newspaper, the Maddock Guardian. Now, for whatever reason, Thierry Marcel is in San Francisco, and Theo Grey runs and edits the new Maddock Maverick newspaper. From time to time, Thierry’s daughter, ‘Dora’ makes an appearance – usually only for social functions. She was engaged to Hank Mathison of Twin Hills, but a wedding never quite occurred.

Saloon Girls
Miss Gem – The premiere town madam, Miss Gem owns and runs the Phoenix Dance Hall, and manages the Saloon’s ‘girls’ for hire. Miss Gem is a legend in her own time, a vision of grace and loveliness and known to have a big heart as well as considerable proportions elsewhere as well. Notable among the saloon’s fancy ladies are Caitlyn, an Irish-accented vision of fire and lace; Desiree, a Cajun beauty of legendary skill; and Rose, the Dusky Rose of Araby.

Once Upon A Time...

Michael Garret
Michael Garrett – A man with a dubious past, Garrett settled in Maddock in 1868, and was elected mayor shortly thereafter. He resigned the post in 1870 and became Territorial Representative, but does check back into Maddock from time to time.

Richard Allard
Another fairly unpopular man in his time, Richard Allard honed his skills as a banker and businessman in Maddock before inheriting his father’s eastern businesses and moving back to shine in that world.

Doc Webster
Doc Webster – The town’s old physician, Webster knew all and said little, and was the quintessential town doctor of the day. Well-liked, he rarely offered an opinion, but it was generally well-considered and taken into advisement.

Dearly Departed...

Gone but not forgotten...

Evan Randolph
Evan Randolph was elected mayor of Maddock in August of 1874, filling the vacancy left by the death of the previous mayor at the hands of outlaws. He was married to Madeline Quintan and held the position for 5 years until his death, also at the hands of outlaws.

Karl Quintan
Karl owned the Twin Hills Ranch, the largest operation of its kind in the area. Ranching made Karl Quintan a very rich man, and with the power of his money Karl liked to try and rule Maddock with a cold iron. Karl and his ranch hands have been accused of a wide variety of bad deeds, but nothing was ever really formerly charged against him.  Karl was killed by means and persons unknown.  His daughter Madeline has taken over the ranch.
